“Data and analytics leaders are expanding their data management capabilities by adding metadata management. This trend is being driven by conflicting pressures: on the one hand, demands for more flexibility in accessing data is growing; on the other, the rising importance of data governance, risk and compliance forces organizations to become more cautious regarding the possible uses of data. This is leading to demands on organizations to offer more transparency in the uses of data, what it actually means, where it is coming from, and whether it can be trusted,” states the Gartner Critical Capabilities report for Metadata Management.
Metadata management requires a proper foundation, clear processes and the right people to execute the work. The building blocks of metadata management, then, consist of both the tools and technology that comprise a strategy, as well as the combination of people and process to create a culture of support and accountability.
